What is Shingles?
Shingles is a painful viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus—the exact same virus that causes chickenpox.
If you have ever had chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in your nervous system. As you get older or if your immune system weakens, the virus can wake up and cause shingles. The condition typically begins with localized pain and tingling, followed by a blistering rash that can last for weeks.
For some, the pain doesn’t stop when the rash clears. The virus can leave patients with chronic, debilitating nerve pain known as Post-Herpetic Neuralgia (PHN), which can last for months or even years. The older you are, the higher your risk of developing PHN.
Why Get the Shingles Vaccine?
The vaccine successfully reduces your risk of developing shingles and slashes your chances of developing chronic PHN nerve pain. Even if you do contract the virus after being vaccinated, the shot significantly lessens the severity and duration of your symptoms.
We administer the Shingrix recombinant vaccine, which offers outstanding protection:
-
Aged 50 to 69 years: 97% effective
-
Aged 70 to 79 years: 90% effective
-
Aged 80 years and older: 89% effective
Who is Eligible for the Vaccine?
Our pharmacists can safely administer the shingles vaccine to:
-
Adults aged 50 and older.
-
Adults aged 18 to 49 who face an increased risk due to a weakened immune system.
Already had shingles? You can and should still safely receive the vaccine to prevent future outbreaks. However, official guidance recommends waiting one full year after your symptoms have completely resolved before getting the shot.
Note: Medical experts do not recommend the shingles vaccine during pregnancy.
